Distance Learning Complaint Process

Complete the institutional process

Online Students enrolled at the University of Kentucky are encouraged to resolve academic disputes with the person(s) most closely involved – starting with the course instructor, the department, and finally, the college. If this does not produce an acceptable result, students may file an appeal using the steps outlined on the Academic Ombud's, Student’s Academic Rights & Appeals page.

Channels for filing other complaints and grievances are available on the Dean of Students, Student Complaints and Grievance Reports page.

Appeal with a state agency

In the unlikely event that the issue is not resolved internally at the University of Kentucky, students living in a State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) state may appeal the decision with the Council for Postsecondary Education, the SARA portal entity for Kentucky. The appeal must be brought within two years of the incident about which the complaint is made. Resolution of the complaint by the Council for Postsecondary Education is final.

Examples of student complaints that may be brought to the SARA portal entity include, but are not limited to, complaints regarding the accuracy of job placement data, tuition or fee information, accreditation, whether a program meets licensure requirements, or course transfer information. Grade appeals and student conduct appeals are not allowed under SARA.

Students living in a non-SARA state may file appeals with the relevant agency in their state of residence.
