Wondering what it’s like to take an online program? At the University of Kentucky, online learning offers the same academic excellence as on-campus classes—with added flexibility for students balancing work, family, and other commitments. With over 100 online degrees and certificates available, UK Online empowers students to study on their own schedule while receiving the same support and instruction from experienced faculty.

How Do Online Classes Work at the University of Kentucky?

The University of Kentucky’s online programs consist of three different learning modalities to meet the diverse needs of students and the program’s learning outcomes: Fully Online, In-Person Requirements, and Online in Real-time.

    1. Fully Online

    • Structure: Most of the program content will be delivered asynchronous via the online course modules, meaning content is accessed and completed on students’ schedules in accordance with the syllabus for due dates.
    • Learning format: Students rely on recorded lectures, readings, assignments, and discussion boards to engage with coursework independently.
    • The Fully Online modality offers the most flexibility to students, allowing them to complete program requirements at a time that works best for them. The majority of UK Online’s programs are offered in this modality.
    1. In-Person Requirements

    • Structure: Programs are primarily online, but they also include additional components that require students to be present in person. These in-person requirements are commonly held during the evenings or weekends to better support the schedules of students balancing work and study.
    • Learning format: In addition to online coursework, students must participate in designated in-person activities, which may include labs, clinicals, classroom sessions, or internships.
    • This modality is primarily intended for students who require hands-on experience, such as clinical instructions for nurses or teaching practicums for education majors, in order to fulfill program requirements.
    1. Online in Real-Time

    • Structure: Programs combine online coursework with live, real-time sessions held synchronously, meaning students are required to attend classes at scheduled times. These real-time sessions are typically scheduled in the evenings and/or weekends to accommodate working adults and provide greater flexibility.
    • Learning format: Classes are often conducted via Zoom and require student participation. Scheduled sessions are communicated in advance through the class syllabus or instructor announcements.
    • Many business and education programs are delivered online in real-time, allowing students to participate and actively engage in live classes.

Do online students get the same degree as on-campus students?

Yes, an online degree is the same as an on-campus degree. Furthermore, the University of Kentucky’s is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), ensuring quality education that is recognized broadly.

Online courses are also taught by experienced faculty, many of whom also instruct on-campus classes, ensuring that academic quality is the same regardless of learning environment. The curriculum of online courses aligns with traditional programs, meaning that the learning outcomes and degree standards are equivalent to on-campus education. There is no mention of "online" on your diploma or transcripts.

Can I defend my dissertation or thesis online?

This depends on the program, but generally online programs allow for thesis or dissertation presentation and defense to be conducted remotely to their committees. Dissertation and thesis defenses may be conducted through online platforms such as Zoom Meeting or Microsoft Teams, offering a flexible option for students who are not on campus, while still upholding high academic standards.

Is online learning harder than in-person learning?

Online learning is not necessarily harder, but it requires a different approach than in-person learning. Compared to traditional programs, students need greater responsibility and self-discipline to manage their schedule and learn independently. While some may find it challenging to stay committed outside a classroom environment, online education is advantageous for its flexibility and the ability to study from anywhere. The University of Kentucky’s online programs ensure that students receive the same high-quality education and support as those enrolled in on-campus programs.

What are the technology requirements to participate in an online program?

A standard computer and high-speed internet are sufficient for students to be successful in their online courses. Students should review the minimum recommendations and guidelines for computer and internet connections on the Student Hardware & Software Guidelines page at the University of Kentucky. If your program has a higher level of technology needs, that will be communicated from the program.

Can I work full-time while earning an online degree?

Yes, many students successfully work full-time while pursuing an online degree. Online programs are designed to accommodate students who are balancing multiple responsibilities. While some programs may require live sessions or in-person instructions, these are often scheduled during the evenings or weekends to maintain flexibility for students.

Can I access the same support as an in-person students?
