Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI)

Mandated by federal regulations 34 CFR § 600.2 and 34 CFR § 668.10, the U.S. Department of Education requires all distance learning courses eligible for Title IV funds (federal financial aid) to "ensure regular and substantive interaction between students and faculty." This requirement aims to promote meaningful engagement and maintain high-quality education in online learning environments. The University of Kentucky enforces this mandate through AR 6.1.1, the course approval process, resources provide on this site, and oversight of course curriculum by department chairs.

Instructors can learn more about how to meet this requirement for distance learning courses by reviewing the handouts below, self-enrolling in the asynchronous RSI & Academic Engagement Canvas course, or by scheduling a consultation to discuss opportunities for incorporating RSI into your course design and interactions.
