Guidelines

To support SACS standard 10.6c, provide a course note as part of the registration process to alert students of any proctoring fees that may be associated with the course.

Include exam expectations and explain what approved materials students may bring to the exam in your syllabus or Canvas shell. Note that students should be prepared to provide an approved photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID card, passport, or a UK Student ID directly prior to the start of the exam. Provide information and timelines for accessing and making arrangements for proctoring services in your syllabus or Canvas shell.

Respondus

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor are tools that may be used within Canvas to “lock down” a browser on a student’s personal computer during testing and to record a student via the computer’s camera during testing. Find out more in Respondus Help.

To enable Respondus in your Canvas Course, select Settings in the course menu and find the Navigation tab. Within the two lists shown (Enabled and Disabled), scroll to find Lockdown Browser and select Enable. Scroll to the bottom of the page and Save changes, and you will now see Lockdown Browser within your Course Menu above Settings.

Departments and colleges may be using other proctoring solutions. See department or college IT staff with your questions. Visit the Technology Help Center article for tips to prepare for online proctoring.

In-Person Proctoring

Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) - The BCTC Testing Center supports in-person proctored exams. Registration is required, and students are encouraged to schedule exam appointments early.

Visit the BCTC Testing Center for more information.

NCTA (National College Testing Association) - NCTA promotes quality testing services through the NCTA Proctoring Network (NPN), a free referral service to support proctored exams. Each facility offers varying levels of proctoring, from paper and pencil only to full computer labs, and each has unique schedules.

View a list of approved NPN proctoring facilities for on-site proctoring options available within and outside of the U.S.

Other Options

Instructors may allow students to choose their own proctoring location and proctor, with final approval coming from the instructor.

To ensure the integrity of the proctored exam, instructors should outline proctoring expectations for the chosen proctor. This Proctor Authorization Template is provided as a contract example for your reference.

Examples of acceptable proctoring locations may include the following, but other locations may be discussed with the student:

  • Public library
  • Local school or university
  • Local place of worship
  • Place of work

Examples of acceptable proctors may include the following, but other possibilities may be discussed with the student:

  • Military testing, training or education officer
  • Military commander two ranks above student
  • Community or Area Learning Center staff
  • College/school/institute education staff
  • Human Resources staff
  • Workplace supervisor two levels above student
  • Library staff
  • Ordained Clergy
  • Law Enforcement training or education office

PLEASE NOTE: The exam proctor cannot be a fellow student, close friend, roommate, fiancé, an immediate supervisor, family member related by blood or marriage, or other acquaintance with whom a conflict of interest may exist.

Since proctoring fees vary by location, remind students to ask about proctoring fees when exploring exam proctors.

Direct students to contact you to discuss any proctoring related issues for your course.
