What is quality assurance in course design?
Quality Assurance (QA) in course design involves implementing strategies and procedures to ensure that the course meets established (or required) standards and objectives.
Why does QA in course design matter?
- The strategies and procedures ensure that online courses and programs provide rigorous and engaging learning experiences for students.
- These activities ensure Faculty Readiness with training and planning to support online teaching and learning.
- Given the emphasis and increased scrutiny for quality course development, QA ensures UK has formalized our set of activities, processes, and methodology to meet required standards and expectations, for example:
- Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) regulation
- Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions (C-RAC)
- SACSCOC
- University-Level Distance Learning Statement
UKO Course Quality Rubric
To assist faculty with designing online courses, we have assembled an abbreviated set of course development standards. These standards are based on the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric (Seventh Edition for Online & Hybrid Courses), which is the national benchmark for higher education online course design. Our team will work with you to incorporate these standards into your distance learning course and answer questions throughout the development process. When the development of a distance learning course is complete, a member of our instructional design team will conduct a review using these standards.

Quality Assurance Initiatives
Course Quality Design Pilot AY26
UK Online launched a Course Quality Pilot Program in June 2025. This pilot is designed to equip and support 10 full-time instructors in enhancing the design, development and quality of their online courses. It offers instructors the opportunity to incorporate evidence-based practices in course design to create dynamic learning environments that foster student success and maximize learning outcomes
