As part of National Distance Learning Week this year, UK Online coordinated sessions featuring online programs and course accessibility. For those who were unable to attend live, streaming of all sessions is now available by clicking the session’s Register Now button on the UK Online National Distance Learning Week webpage.
“These events help us connect technology, pedagogy, and student experience,” said Miranda Hines, Associate Director of Distance Learning in the UK Online unit. “Our goal is to ensure that no matter where students are learning from, they feel fully supported and engaged in their academic journey.” A major focus for 2025 were the virtual open house events for prospective students. The sessions highlighted select online programs, providing an opportunity for prospective students to ask questions and learn more about the University of Kentucky’s online offerings. This year’s lineup included information from the Gatton College of Business and Economics, the College of Education, the College of Nursing, and the College of Social Work.
The faculty-focused webinar, Enhancing Accessibility in Online Courses, highlighted the accessibility tools available in UK’s learning management system and shared tips for practical application. Led by Buddy Hall, UK Online’s primary Canvas administrator, and Jennifer Pusateri, CELT’s Senior Universal Design Consultant, the session guided instructors through strategies for ensuring their online courses meet accessibility standards while enhancing the learning experience for all students.
Hall demonstrated how tools like Ally for Canvas automatically evaluate course materials and provide step-by-step guidance to improve accessibility. Faculty were shown how simple adjustments — adding alt text to images, using descriptive link text, structuring headings, or ensuring proper color contrast — can make a significant difference in student access and success.
Pusateri connected those technical tools to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, reminding instructors that accessibility is about anticipating a range of student needs from the start. “We’re not just checking a box,” she explained. “We’re designing with intention, so all students can participate fully and equitably in the learning experience.”
